The energy-rich waters off the English and Welsh coastlines will for the first time be screened for their potential to host large-scale arrays of wave- and tidal-energy devices, in a nod to the brisk evolution seen in the UK’s marine renewables industry over the past several years.

In addition to helping the government and renewables industry shape a draft plan for the future deployment of utility-scale projects, the screening will also inform officials as to whether a full Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) in England and Wales will be required.

The Scottish government has already produced a preliminary SEA for marine energy in Scotland. Northern Ireland also recently appointed consultants to undertake an SEA for offshore wind and marine renewables.

Morgan AQUA English Blog

The UK will also seek input from developers, utilities and other stakeholders about their plans and preferred locations for developing commercial-scale wave farms and tidal stream projects.

“The marine energy sector has reached a pivotal stage with more and more devices ready to go into the water,” says Phil Hunt, deputy leader of the UK’s House of Lords.

“The screening exercise will allow us to understand better the energy potential of marine energy devices and the realistic timescale of when multiple devices will be installed and commissioned,” Hunt says.

AEA and Hartley Anderson will conduct the work on behalf of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). The screening will exclude the Severn Estuary, which is already undergoing a feasibility study for its tidal power potential.

Sapphire Energy has built a revolutionary platform that uses photosynthetic microorganisms to produce a renewable, high-value replacement for fossil fuel petroleum. This domestic crude oil requires only sunlight, CO2 and non-potable water – and can be produced at massive scale on non-arable land.

Morgan AQUA's English Blog

Sapphire’s technology and team of renowned experts give the company the unique ability to scale biological systems and produce transportation fuels, including high-octane gasoline, to ASTM certification standards.

The company’s final products will have the same chemical composition as gasoline and will be completely compatible with the existing refining, distribution and fleet infrastructure.

Not ethanol, not biodiesel. ¿Renewable gasoline?

Building a revolutionary fuel company, from the ground up

Sapphire’s goal is to be the world’s leading producer of renewable petrochemical products. The team has built a scientifically superior platform that uses photosynthetic microorganisms to convert sunlight, and CO2 into carbon-neutral alternatives to conventional fossil fuels.

The third smallest sovereign nation in the world has just made an enormous contribution to relieving the world’s debt to the environment.

Singapore researchers at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) have discovered how to turn carbon dioxide into methanol….

Double take: They have found a way to make greenhouse gas green.

Triple take: They took the biggest contributor to the world’s carbon footprint and converted it into a source of clean energy for the world. Astounding.

In case you’re not jumping out of your skin yet, the IBN research was immediately sent to Angewandte Chemie, published by the German Chemical Society, and the prestigious journal called it a “hot paper,” and “very important.”

In layman’s terms, what IBN researchers discovered is that if they used N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), an organic catalyst, as opposed to heavy metal catalysts, carbon dioxide is activated, a state which it must be in to transform it into something useful.

Then, hydrosilane, a combination of silica and hydrogen, is added to the NHC-activated carbon dioxide and, by adding water into the solution through hydrolysis, the carbon dioxide transforms into methanol.

IBN principal research scientist, Dr. Yugen Zhang, explained:

Morgan AQUA's English Blog

“Hydrosilane provides hydrogen, which bonds with carbon dioxide in a reduction reaction. This carbon dioxide reduction is efficiently catalyzed by NHCs even at room temperature. Methanol can be easily obtained from the product of the carbon dioxide reaction.

Our previous research on NHCs has demonstrated
their multiple applications as powerful antioxidants to fight degenerative diseases, and as effective catalysts to transform sugars into an alternative energy source.

We have now shown that NHCs can also be applied successfully to the conversion of carbon dioxide into methanol, helping to unleash the potential of this highly abundant gas.”

I wonder when this will become front page news….

(Quoting TrendsBird)

The Opinion: ¿Silica? Just wondering how they can made silica in a non contaminant process…
